Hey everyone,
I'm thinking about learning guitar and could really use some advice on where to start.
I'm a complete beginner and not sure whether it's better to go for an acoustic or electric guitar first. I've seen a lot of mixed opinions online, so I'd love to hear what people here recommend from their own experience.
Also, what are some good starter guitars or brands to look at (or avoid)? I don't want to spend loads straight away, but I also don't want something that's going to make learning harder.
Any tips for a beginner would be really appreciated too things you wish you knew when you first started, etc.
Thanks in advance
Advice needed please
Hi.
I'm thinking, if you have access to an acoustic guitar, I'd suggest learning chords on that. It is harder, but it'll therefore force you to use good technique. What sort of music would you want to play?
Don't do what I did and start on electric. It will set you back years in terms of developing tone, touch and taste. You learn bad habits on electric, and will I inevitably want to run before you can walk wanting to play Angus Young solos straight away.
Thanks for the advice that actually made me laugh because I can totally see myself grabbing an electric and immediately trying to be Angus Young instead of learning anything sensible.
Really appreciate you sharing your experience though. It's definitely something I'll keep in mind while I'm deciding.
Thanks for that MRROCK I keep hearing that acoustic is the tough love option, so maybe it's exactly what I need. If it forces me to actually learn chords instead of faffing about, that's probably a win.
Musicwise honestly a bit of everything. Some chilled acoustic stuff, maybe a bit of soft rock once I stop sounding like a dying goose.
I'm a singer but I manage to get a few chords out of an acoustic on stage! I would go acoustic first. Visit a guitar shop with many you can try. You'll find some suit you more than others. They'll just feel 'right'.
As a beginner, I'd say get something fairly cheap but not the cheapest. It's worth having something half decent.
