I'm involved in a project to find out how many bands/players are there out there who use a blues harp (harmonica) within their set. Ultimately I'm looking to use the information to help in getting funding to raise awareness of the instrument to the next generation.
I'm also writing for a new online blues harp publication so I'm looking to hype blues bands/players....PM me if you're interested to find out more.
Blues harp players
Hi Frekie,
I've got a few harps but I'm not very good.
All the tutorial stuff I see is awful.
I would, like to see something that explains crossharp and minor harp a bit better and shows how to play scales and find chords. I can find the I - IV- V chords for crossharp but that's about it. But what other harp chords work over the I? I can't keep sucking non-stop for six bars!
I just want to pick up the right harp for the key and know how to chug out a basic accompaniment rather than play 'Yankee-bloody-doodle'.
Hiya Stub,
Firstly I know how you feel...it's taken me an age to find the right tutor for me to grow my own playing.
I've found that playing with other musicians helps, in my case in my Blues band..Blue 2 The Bone.
But I've also been really lucky!
I happened to connect with Ben Hewlett who is a profession harp player and teacher. He runs Playharmonica.co.uk and online teaching site, offers online teaching and 1 to 1 Skype and personal tutorage. If you take a look at his web site he's presently offering FREE 30 day sign up following on from his lessons on the Cerys Mathew's BBC radio 2 Monday Blues spot and had huge uptake...really very exciting stuff!
If you PM me your E mail address I'd be happy to introduce you directly to Ben, that way he can suggest a bespoke series of lessons geared just for your needs....
Happy harping
Shaun
The Reckless Tram
Just to say that, I have been playing bluesharp for 10 years this year. I am an accomplished guitarist first and foremost (40 years) and took up bluesharp for the love of its sound.
I started a band (no guitar) called The Hubcaps to learn the little devil and we've recorded an album's worth of tunes, had our stuff played and played live on BBC Radio Berkshire without even trying.
I have had sat with Rollo Markee, Giles King, Joff Watkins and Will Greener .....I have lots to share and love bluesharp a lot.
