How to use the metronome
Drag the slider to choose a tempo between 30 and 250 beats per minute, or type a number straight into the box. The plus and minus buttons nudge the tempo one beat at a time. Press start and play along with the click.
On a keyboard, the space bar starts and stops the metronome and the T key taps the tempo.
Find the tempo of a song
Don't know how fast a song is? Put it on and tap the tap tempo button in time with the beat. After a few taps the metronome works out the tempo for you. Keep tapping for a more accurate reading, or pause for a couple of seconds to start again.
Practising with a metronome
Learning a tricky riff or solo is much easier if you slow it right down. Find the tempo where you can play the part cleanly, even if that feels very slow, and only then start to speed up.
- Raise the tempo a few beats at a time rather than in big jumps
- If you start making mistakes, drop back to the last speed you could play cleanly
- Count along out loud. The first beat of each bar has a higher click to help you keep your place
- Change the beats per bar to 3 for a waltz feel, or 6 for songs in 6/8
Speed trainer
The speed trainer raises the tempo for you while you play, so you don't have to take your hands off the guitar. Set the metronome to a speed you can manage, tick speed trainer, then choose how much faster to go, how often, and the tempo you're aiming for. For example, start at 80 BPM and speed up by 5 BPM every 4 bars until you reach 120.
When you press stop the tempo goes back to where you started, ready for the next run.
Subdivisions
At slow tempos there's a long gap between clicks, which makes it hard to stay in time. Subdivisions add quieter clicks between the beats. Choose eighths for two notes per beat, triplets for three, or sixteenths for four.
